Introduction

“Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing you do that makes you good.” ― Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers: The Story of Success

Acknowledgments:

We all have different backgrounds, opportunities, advantages and disadvantages; it is what we do with them that defines us. I can further guarantee you that no one who has ever achieved anything of merit truly did so alone. We all have help along the way and it deserves credit and recognition.

I would like to thank my family who have supported and motivated me to keep building through adversity, my friends who have stood by through 12-hour work days and 7-day work weeks, and my athletes who have given me the opportunity to share their journeys to collegiate scholarships, professional contracts, and the Olympic podium. In addition, I would like to pay special recognition to my former professors, current mentors, and inspiring colleagues especially:

Brian Fairbrother, for bridging the gap between athletic training and strength & conditioning

Brijesh Patel, for acquainting me with next level movement and postural concepts

Ken Kosier, for introducing me to unique opportunities in professional sports medicine

Todd Lachman, for demonstrating humble leadership in both business and life

Monica Aksamit, for welcoming me into the fencing community and challenging me to progress

Alex Ochocki & Jerome Guth, for including me in your innovation and success within fencing

Tony Jouaux, for serving as a mentor to me in sport science and professional soccer fitness

Sean Light, for pushing the boundaries of strength and conditioning through neuroscience

Dr. Montgomery, for presenting me with invaluable learning opportunities in orthopedic medicine

Thank you.

I have spent the last 6 years with both help and hurdles leading to a multitude of both successes and learning opportunities. I've analyzed the nuts and bolts of the strength & conditioning/sports performance industries, and from this experience, I've developed a vivid idea of what it could be.

I've watched underdog athletes achieve the seemingly impossible through diligence and hard work.

I've met incredible people with game-changing ideas that will one day revolutionize what we call "fitness". I've been humbled by those who put passion into their life's work to create something greater.

On the other hand, in some areas I've seen quantity being prioritized over quality, contradicting opinions on training, nutrition, and recovery being displayed as fact to the general public and even innovative ideas being smothered by close-minded views if they stray too far from the status quo.

Gunter Performance (GP) is about quality, clarity, and precision. We are an athletic development company specializing in private training and online coaching for athletes ranging from Olympic medalists and Pros to collegiate and high school competitors.

My mission:

"To deliver unparalleled results through data-driven training, nutrition, and recovery systems to athletes pursuing the upper limits of their genetic potential."

Through this site I hope to stimulate an open dialogue between objective professionals and inquisitive enthusiasts. I plan to differentiate fact from fiction as best as the latest research allows, and I intend to emphasize quality over quantity, whether that be social media posts, standard of training, or business.

What you won't find here are articles on "The Best Cleanse for RAPID (and unsustainable) Weight Loss", or "How to Look Like your Favorite Celebrity without Habit Development and, well...Effort." (Unless you have the right instagram filter and have mastered Photoshop). You won't get advice on a tech wearable that will build your muscles while you eat potato chips, and I won't pollute your inbox with fluff pieces on stylish gym attire.

As the fitness/performance industries can be oversaturated with confusing information from questionable sources, I will bring quality information to the forefront with transparent unbiased resources. We will discuss some the most debated topics and bring new ideas to the table to push the field forward.

Over the next several months, we will cover topics like:

  • Using Psychology to Become More Effective Coaches

  • Why Breathing Might Just be the Most Important Exercise for You Right Now

  • How to your Use Senses to Get More Out of Training

  • The Roles of Artificial Intelligence and Technology in the Fitness Industry

  • Training and Eating Specific to Your Body Type

  • How to Tweak Your Nutrition When Recovering From Injury

  • How to Sleep Like a Professional Athlete (beyond just putting down your phone)

  • Why Your Nervous System is a Coward

Each article will include a familiar format, where I will list my sources, outline any potential bias or disclaimers, and throw in a complimenting quote for good measure. For our Millenials out there, I will summarize all major points in an easy-to-read list at the end with specific actionable items so the information can be applied right away. I will further provide additional resource links as a reward for those looking to dive deeper.

I look forward to to all feedback, aggressive debate, and progressive conversation. We have the opportunity to advance the world of human performance through quality information and effective practice. It is up to us to control the narrative and demand more from our training, nutrition, and recovery.

Pursue the best version of yourself.
